European Pathways to Cultural Landscapes - "Pathways to Cultural Landscapes" is a partnership of public and private institutions, which care for the cultural landscapes of their regions across Europe in a qualified and professional way through scientific research, communication and sustainable management. The creation of a common forum for discussion and co-operation is funded by the programme Culture 2000 of the European Union.
European Cultural Paths ECP is a cooperation between five regional archaeological projects in Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Norway and Sweden. All projects deal with cultural landscapes which were shaped and heavily inflicted by human activities in prehistoric times, and which today show a very good preservation of archaeological sites, monuments and remains. ECP focuses on the Bronze Age, but all traces of human activities from the Stone Age to historic times are taken into account. www.bronzeage.net
Kaali Meteorite Crater Field - The meteorite crater field in Kaali, Saaremaa, is the rarest natural monument in Estonia as well as the most impressive crater field of the whole Eurasia. The Kaali meteorite was the last giant meteorite that fell in a densely populated region of the world. Its fall on the inhabited island of Saaremaa evidently caused extensive damage and possibly also numerous victims, it has been compared with an explosion of a small nuclear bomb. The fall of the meteorite was historically remarkable as an event and for its influences on human culture. Besides that, a new landform emerged as the result of the explosion, well fit for a fortification, a watering place and a sacrificial site. The archaeological investigation in Kaali has confirmed the unique nature of the crater field.
Rebala Heritage Protection Area – the eastern outpost of the Nordic Bronze Age Culture - The plain landscape, which opens for the travellers on the Tallinn-Narva road that passes through Jõelähtme, does not disclose itself easily. "Still waters run deep" as the saying goes. The dull limestone region acquires a totally different meaning when a passer-by learns that it is one of the oldest cultural lands extremely rich in various archaeological and historical antiquities and natural objects. The rich historical heritage, which due to more than 5000 years of human settlement has been preserved up to the present day, now needs protection.
